Turramurra Park
Brief
The existing dwelling was a single-storey brick bungalow elevated above the street, with a cramped plan which under-utilised the opportunities of the sloping site. The clients wanted to make better use of the space available and create a spacious, open plan family home with a strong connection to the outside. As well as this, they wanted to create a sense of arrival to the main entrance stairs without compromising privacy. A unique contemporary aesthetic was desired by the clients so as to work with their own collection of paintings, furniture and objet collected from different parts of South-East Asia.
Solution
The existing ground floor plan was simplified to clarify the spatial flow and frame views both internally and to the back yard. The new entry stairs are veiled from the street via a freestanding timber screen panel, creating a transitional indoor/outdoor space which folds in towards the main entrance. A second storey was added to maximise the opportunities for living space on the ground floor, with voids connecting the levels visually and spatially, through which skylights channel light into the centre of the home. Bold colour is used to link spaces and enliven the interior, while a new outdoor entertainment area and pool connect the indoor and outdoor spaces. Material is also used to delineate and articulate the composition of volumes in conjunction with the horizontal and vertical elements.
