Roseville

Brief

Perched on a rock face at the cusp of Garigal National Park, the existing four storey dwelling required a deft approach to the improvement of spatial layering, indoor / outdoor flow and vertical connectivity. The clients wanted to modernise the dated interior and open the building out to ground floor outdoor areas that could be used all year. As well as this, the clients had a large collection of books and required intelligent storage strategies.

Solution

The existing staircase and unusual concrete construction system presented challenges to flow and access to daylight in the deep plan. Replacing the balustrade with frameless glass and employing a rich palette of materials, textures and colours throughout the house formed the vehicle for unifying the various levels and functions of the house. The ground floor pool and casual dining area is revitalised with a fresh interior treatment and adjustable screening and glazing, whilst on the first floor the entertainment room becomes the leisure centre of the house, with a floor to ceiling library and home theatre. An urban infill approach to the various balconies and interior cubby holes allowed for a new main bedroom ensuite, extensive cellar, art studio and other spaces to flourish in the house, creating excellent overall functionality and liveability.
