Dee Why

Brief

Located on a prominent corner near Dee Why beach, the project deals with the ideas of entry and address. The existing weatherboard house lacked a strong entry point and had no provision for indoor / outdoor living at ground level. Further, the only opportunity to create a private open space was in the front part of the site.

Solution

Sited at a midpoint between the street and the main floor levels, the new living room steps out onto a landscaped courtyard, absorbing part of the original entrance stairs. This highly articulated box defines a new entry axis expressed as a projecting parapet. New stone steps connect the entry and the street, providing a sense of address and arrival. Interior connections are detailed through the internal stair and balustrade screen, integrated fireplace, and custom front entry door.
